PhiloQuests: the day of creativity

10. Meal Mutiny

Cupcake sculptures

ObjectiveTo let your ideas burst by making cupcakes stuffed with creativity!

Duration: 30 to 75 minutes

Material:

  • Cupcakes
  • Icing
  • Decorative candy and sprinkles
  • Plastic or wooden sticks or toothpicks

Instructions:

  1. Imagine your creation. With cupcakes you've made using a recipe or a mix, think about what you could create, either on your own or teaming up with a family member. How can you put the cupcakes together to make an animal or an object? How can you use the sticks and decorations to make your creation look even more whimsical? You can get inspiration from the creations of other Philoquesters below!

  2. Build your creation. Now use the sticks to attach the cakes together in the shape that you've chosen. Then add the decorations, trying to vary the colours and shapes. If your first idea doesn't work, don't hesitate to change it along the way! Sometimes you also need to take small bites of your creation to transform it…

  3. Display your creation. Resist the temptation to eat it all and invite your family to come and admire your creation (or your creations, if you've done this activity together). Then, before stuffing yourselves, ask yourselves the following questions: Is your creation a sculpture? Are you about to taste creativity? Can a cupcake be art? Why or why not?

...

Bonus: If sugar has given you a new boost of energy, you can think together about the following questions: Is it sometimes important to disrupt the routine? Is disorder sometimes better than order? Are there situations that demand revolution?

Can a cake be art?

Tricks for tots: Have your cupcakes thrilled your taste buds? As these little delights overflowing with creativity settle in your stomachs, imagine that creativity retakes shape in you... What would it say if it had to live in your body from now on? Would it feel comfortable, at home? Or... would its creative protests to regain its freedom make you nauseous?

Tips for teens: So, can a cupcake be art? To push your ideas even further, think together about different art forms. Is cooking an art? What about cinema or makeup? Are there different categories of art? Are some art forms superior to others? Why or why not? To feed your dialogue, each family member can choose an art form that they will have to represent at the "International Competition of the Most Important Art of the Planet"! Improvise or write a speech extolling its merits!

Share your creative reflections by sending them via email.
Include photos of your projects and notes of your thoughts, as well as your first name and your age!
