PhiloQuests: the day of creativity

2. Idea Stretching

Creativity: a creature!

This activity is reproduced with permission from the board game "Kookception: Philo at Play" created by our community partner Brila as part of its philocreation approach.

  ...

Objective: To better understand the concept of creativity by stretching it out in all directions through mini-missions of playful thinking!

Duration: 15 to 45 minutes

Material:

  • Sheets of paper and pen

  • Coloured pencils and markers

  • Your imagination

Instructions:

  • Mission 1Define the concept. Imagine a very curious alien who wants to understand the human world, but who doesn't have the same concepts on their planet. How would you explain creativity to them by giving a definition of the concept and examples from planet Earth.
  • Mission 2: Imagine the concept. If the concept of creativity were a living creature, what would it look like and why? Close your eyes and visualize its appearance and behaviour, also thinking about its personality, thoughts and feelings. Write down all your ideas because they will be useful for the following activities, like Creative Conception and Creative Construction. Then draw a portrait of this creature using as much detail as possible.
  • Mission 3: Compare the concept. It’s sometimes by making comparisons that you can discover new ideas! In this game of wacky metaphors, your task is to make a connection between the concept and something completely different: If creativity were a dessert... what kind of dessert would it be and why? Describe this dessert as if it were the most appetizing and gourmet option on the menu in a restaurant.

...

Bonus: Are you still overflowing with ideas? Then imagine if you could spend a day on a desert island with the concept of creativity. What would you do and why? Visualize the creature you drew and the activities you could do together! You can even plan your schedule and draw a moment that you could spend together.

What if creativity was a living creature

Tricks for tots: Before drawing creativity as a creature, why not try to become this creature yourself? Imagine how it could speak and move. What does it want to say, what does it feel, what does it do for fun? Invent a little scenario by pretending that you are this creature and then add your ideas to your drawing!
Tips for teens: In addition to imagining creativity as a creature, think about someone in the world or in the history of humanity who for you really represents the concept of creativity. How is this person a symbol of this concept? Consider the same criteria: their appearance, behaviour, personality, thoughts and feelings. Is this person creative on all these levels or just some, and to what degree? What do you think makes a person really creative?

Share your creative reflections by sending them via email.
Include photos of your projects and notes of your thoughts, as well as your first name and your age!
